The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO, as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development in the next fifteen years. UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”. The relevance of ISID, however, applies in greater or lesser extent to all SDGs. Accordingly, the Organization’s programmatic focus is structured in four strategic priorities: Creating shared prosperity; Advancing economic competitiveness; Safeguarding the environment; and Strengthening knowledge and institutions.
Each of these programmatic fields of activity contains a number of individual programmes, which are implemented in a holistic manner to achieve effective outcomes and impacts through UNIDO’s four enabling functions: (i) technical cooperation; (ii) analytical and research functions and policy advisory services; (iii) normative functions and standards and quality-related activities; and (iv) convening and partnerships for knowledge transfer, networking and industrial cooperation. Such core functions are carried out in Departments/Offices in its Headquarters, Regional Offices and Hubs and Country Offices.
The Department of Environment (EAE/ENV) contributes to ISID and the implementation of the SDGs, in particular of SDG 9, by greening existing industries and products, as well as by facilitating creation of new green industries and products, and by minimizing resource use along value chains and during the lifetime of products, facilitating uptake of circular economy practices. The Department promotes the concept of circular economy, sustainable design of products with less materials, being easy to maintain and incorporating longevity, industrial resource efficiency to improve the effective use of natural resources including in particular materials and water; assists developing countries and countries with economies in transition to achieve the objectives of and compliance with multilateral environmental agreements; reduces the release of industrial pollutants into the environment; and improves sustainable access to water for productive uses.
The Department encourages industrial development for economic growth that is sustainable, resource efficient, beneficial to the climate, and resilient as well as protective of the natural environment and human health, and keeps workers, communities and consumers safe. Its activities serve to improve competitiveness, as well as development of and access to markets, particularly for SMEs. The Department acts as the focal point in UNIDO for various multilateral environmental agreements and multilateral co-operation in the field of the environment: the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer; the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants; and the Minamata Convention on Mercury; as well as other relevant international initiatives and conventions such as the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), and multilateral co-operation in initiatives like the Partnership on Action for Green Economy (PAGE) and the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) and the Green Industry Platform (GIP). The Department coordinates its service delivery with the services offered by other technical departments, and other relevant organizational entities of UNIDO.
This position is located under the Industrial Pollution Mitigation Division (EAE/ENV/IPM) which is responsible for supporting developing countries and countries with economies in transition to implement the Chemicals and Wastes obligations and requirements under the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions and other relevant agreements, in particular where it relates to larger and formalized industries and sectors, and to leverage its experience to address industrial pollution mitigation in general.
Sound management of unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polychlorinated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to reduce their emission from the industrial waste sector UNIDO is the implementing agency of the GEF-6 project entitled “Sound management of unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polychlorinated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to reduce their emission from the industrial waste sector’’. The aim of the project is to establish a system for effective management of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDBEs) and unintended persistent organic pollutants (u-POPs) in Côte d’Ivoire, with a particular focus on e-wastes and end-of-life vehicles. The project intends to upgrade e-wastes and end-of-life vehicles dismantling sectors, through technical assistance and investment projects to demonstrate business viability. It is envisaged these activities would demonstrate the proper processing of at least 90,100 tons of e-waste and end of life vehicles, helping to avoid emissions of 13 tons of POP-PBDEs.

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, and working with the project team, administers elements of technical cooperation programme or specific project/s of limited complexity and implementation of technical cooperation programmes and activities. Main duties are:
– Selecting, organizing and summarizing background information to describe the overall context and background relevant to a project or a sector of technical cooperation activities in a country, assessing the local context for the planning and administration of individual technical cooperation projects;
– Analysing and interpreting project background history and documentation, identifying, reconstructing and documenting significant project events, decisions and deviations;
– Drafting sections of project documents such as project background and justification;
– Informing experts, consultants and other project participants about logistical arrangements and internal procedures for monitoring and reporting in terms of the immediate objectives of specific projects;
– Monitoring specific aspects of project implementation and identifying problems and proposing that actions be taken to expedite delivery of inputs;
– Drafting comments on designated aspects of project progress as an input to programme monitoring;
– Drafting project revisions, including adjusting individual project budgets, on the basis of changed work plans.
