Org. Setting and Reporting

The internships are located in the UNCITRAL Law Library at the International Trade Law Division (ITLD), Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, Vienna (Austria). The Division functions as the substantive secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

The UNCITRAL Law Library services the UNCITRAL secretariat, State delegates and outside visitors. It houses one of the largest multi-lingual trade law collections in Europe. More information is available at: https://uncitral.un.org/en/library.

The positions are for a minimum duration of two months and up to a maximum of six months with various starting dates within the period of 1 June – 30 November 2021.

The internship is UNPAID and can either be part-time or full-time.

Full-time interns work five days per week (40 hours). Part-time interns work 20 hours a week. Interns work under the direct supervision of the Legal Librarian of the UNCITRAL Law Library.

Given the current situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, selected interns may have to work remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Austria.

Responsibilities

The objective of the internship is to assist the officers of ITLD in fulfilling the mandate of UNCITRAL, while providing practical training to the intern. Responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and interest areas within librarianship, as well as the length of the internship period and the location of the intern (i.e. on-site or remote).

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

•Assists with reference and client services
•Assists with the research and preparation of comparative legal studies
•Catalogues incoming items (TIND)
•Collection development
•Digitization projects
•Assists with the development and maintenance of the UNCITRAL website (Drupal)
•Social media (LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, etc.)
•Multimedia production (videos, podcasts, etc.)
•Assists with the creation and maintenance of training materials
•Assists with the development and maintenance of Knowledge Management tools

Education

Applicants for an internship must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

• Be computer literate in standard software applications; strong communications skills and social media experience are an advantage;

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and of the UN International Trade Law Commission (UNCITRAL), and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in either English OR French, i.e., oral and written proficiency, is required for the internship. Knowledge of both working languages or of an additional official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian) is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
